Dear Father, I want to divorce my self-interests. May you separate my selfish desires. Help me to get rid of everything about me, and only be about you.
SELFISH AMBITION
Lord, if I really look at this, the behavior is very wrong. But in society today, we don’t even see selfish ambition as a sin. At least I have not. I thought being ambitious was a good thing.
Dear child, what is the definition of “selfish?”
Father, this is what I found: (of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure. (OxfordLanguages). Another definition: : concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one’s own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others (Mirriam-Webster)
Father God, this is what I got from your Holy Word. Selfish ambition is:
Unacceptable:
The acts of the flesh … selfish ambition … that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21 NIV (emphasis mine)
Demonic:
But if you harbor … selfish ambition … is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have … selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. James 3:14-16 NIV (emphasis mine)
Forbidden:
Do nothing out of selfish ambition … Philippians 2:3 NIV (emphasis mine)
Dear child, dedicate yourself as a living sacrifice to me. Offer yourself up to me. 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
Lord, thank you for this lesson this morning. Thank you for your wisdom about selfish ambition. I have never considered how bad selfish ambition is; I am going to let go of all my self-seeking behavior, and only seek to be of service to others. Please help me to do that Lord. Please cleanse away from my soul any selfish ambition. In the name of your son, Jesus Christ, I petition you Father God. Amen.
